Pokemon GYM basics

Once you reach level 5 in Pokemon Go you would gain access to the Pokemon GYM feature. There are various ways you can interact with a GYM.

An unclaimed GYM

It is highly unlikely at this point of time that you might come across a GYM that has not been claimed yet. You can identify an unclaimed GYM by its color, a GYM that has a  white theme to it is unclaimed. All you need to do it get into its range and drop off one of your Pokemon and then the GYM color changes to your team’s color and you gain XP for that.

Attack an enemy team’s GYM

Most often you would find that a GYM is owned by a rival team. The idea is to explore the GYM by clicking on it and browsing through the Pokemon that are protecting the GYM. That way you can chose your Pokemon wisely for the GYM battle. There are two scenarios here either you defeat all the Pokemon’s defending the GYM or you lose the battle. When you win the battle you get to claim the GYM and put your Pokemon there to defend it and you gain XP for the victory. But, if you lose the battle you still get XP if you defeat at least one Pokemon at the GYM and you also lower the reputation of the GYM which instead adversely affects the number of Pokemon that the GYM can hold. Another tip would be to revive your Pokemon and go back to the GYM and defeat the Pokemon at the GYM before the trainers replace them.

Defending your team’s GYM

If you come across a GYM that has been claimed by your team you can help your team defend it. The objective of claiming a GYM is to defend it and also help it gain prestige so that it can house more Pokemon. The GYM generates coins and XP for the team members who house their Pokemon to protect that GYM. Browse through the GYM that your team own by walking into its range. If you find a spot in the GYM that’s free, you can put your Pokemon there. Once you have your Pokemon defending a GYM then you can walk up to a PokeStop and you would notice a shield at the top right of your screen. That shield indicates the number of Pokemon you have protecting a GYM. Once the shield is ready to be claimed you can click on it and you get Pokemon coins and Stardust.

Ways to gain XP

Gaining XP in Pokemon Go is an essential aspect of the game since its directly related to leveling up in the game. You need to level up to gain access to Pokemon that have higher combat power and other perks in the game. I am asked by a lot of people about the different ways they can gain XP even when they do not find any Pokemon to catch. So this post is completely dedicated to the different ways you can gain XP and level up fast.

Catch a Pokemon

This is the simplest way to gain XP. Every time you catch a new Pokemon you gain 100XP. But if you capture a new Pokemon you gain 500 XP.

Evolve your Pokemon

Its easy to find a few Pokemon easily. You might find abundant Rattata, Pigey or a Nidoran. The list is endless and may vary according to your area and location. But a quick way to rack up 500 XP is to evolve a Pokemon. It requires you to collect a certain amount of Pokemon Candy, you get 3 Pokemon candy for a Pokemon every time you catch that Pokemon. In the picture below I need 25 Eevee Candy to evolve my Eevee.

Walk up to a Pokestop

Another easy way to gain 50 XP is to walk upto a Pokestop. You not only gain XP you also get free Pokeballs and if you are lucky you might get some special items. Only thing to remember is that you need to be in range of a Pokestop to get XP and the special items.

Using a Lucky Egg

If you get a lucky egg and activate it, you will gain double XP for the next 30 minutes upon activation. That means that you would gain 200 XP for each Pokemon caught and 1000XP for each Pokemon that you evolve in that time period.

Gain XP at the GYM

There are many ways to gain XP at a GYM. You gain 100XP if you battle a trainer at the GYM. You gain 150XP if you defeat a Pokemon Trainer. You gain 50 XP if you defeat a Pokemon at the GYM.

Get Extra XP for Skilled Pokeball throw

You can gain some extra 100 XP whenever you complete an excellent throw to catch a Pokemon. You can gain 10 more XP if you throw a curve ball. I will be doing a post on how to throw a Pokeball.

Those are the ways that can help you reach higher levels faster and get you ahead of your competitors. Feel free to share any other ways that you might have come across.

Getting Started like a boss.

If you just downloaded Pokemon Go on your smartphone and are wondering what to do next. This post will walk you through the things you would want to know to get a head start and catch up with your friends in no time.

Objective of the Game

This game is the ultimate nostalgia for anybody and everybody who ever watched the Pokemon cartoon series. Growing up we all wanted to be able to explore unknown areas and catch those mystical creatures. This game fulfills your dream of doing just that, all you need is your smartphone. The objective of this game is fairly simple, all you need to do is go around your area with your smartphone and catch the Pokemon that might be hiding in your community park, your bedroom or places you have not been before. As you progress you gain experience points and level up which opens up other features like joining a  team, fight other Pokemon, control Pokemon GYM’s.

Getting Setup

Once you have downloaded the app here are the steps to get up and running in no time:

  • Enter your date of birth.
  • Sign in using your google account or if you already have a “Pokemon Trainer Club” account you can sign in using that but due to server issues I would recommend signing in with your Google account since its faster. For IOS there shall be an alternate for signing in with their AppStore account.
  • After you are signed into your account you are asked to enter your character name and create your character.
  • You are all set then you see a screen where you are asked to pick a starting Pokemon from 3 Pokemons. Chose any one it really does not matter which Pokemon you start so I just started off with Bulbasaur.
  • To catch a Pokemon in the game, you have to tap on the Pokemon you wish to catch. A pokeball appears at the bottom of the screen and you have to flick the pokeball towards the Pokemon. The objective is to get the pokeball to touch the Pokemon to capture them. It gets hard sometimes to throw the pokeball right but I will be writing another post to help you throw it perfectly. It is an important skill to learn since it saves you pokeballs.

There you are now you are all set to explore the world around you and catch other Pokemon. You have more chances of finding a Pokemon where you see rustling leaves, walking around that area has always been fruitful to me. A quick tip: do not forget to enable GPS on your phone before launching the game since this game primarily relies on your location information.

Here is a quick look at my character.
